ACC stands on business with College Football Playoff after BYU loss image

The ACC made its stance clear Saturday, seizing a prime opportunity to boost Miami’s College Football Playoff hopes after No. 11 BYU fell out of contention.

The Cougars’ 34-7 loss to Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championship effectively removed one competitor from the at-large pool. And the league wasted no time reminding the CFP selection committee of Miami’s resume.

Shortly after BYU was eliminated in Arlington, the ACC’s official football account posted a message on X, tagging the CFP and writing, “your move.” The statement adds to the Hurricanes’ most compelling argument, which is a head-to-head win over No. 10 Notre Dame.

Miami defeated the Fighting Irish 27-24 in the Aug. 31 season opener, a result that has sparked an argument as both teams pushed toward the postseason.

Notre Dame rebounded from an 0-2 start to win 10 straight, including victories over ranked USC and Pitt. Miami opened 5-0, stumbled with losses to Louisville and SMU, but has since won four consecutive games — all by multiple scores.

Miami head coach Mario Cristobal has repeatedly referred to the head-to-head result as the ultimate difference. “The best part about football? You get to settle it on the field,” he said after Miami’s win over Pitt.

Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman has responded that few teams are playing better than the Irish. Whether the committee leans on resume or current form, the ACC made one thing clear that it’s standing firmly behind Miami ahead of Sunday’s bracket reveal.
