Ed Orgeron has made it no secret he’d welcome a return to LSU under new head coach Lane Kiffin, but that opportunity hasn’t materialized.
The former Tigers coach, who led LSU to the 2019 national championship, said on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast that despite conversations with Kiffin, no formal offer has been made.
Orgeron explained that Kiffin previously reached out about joining a potential staff elsewhere, but timing wasn’t right. When Kiffin later asked him for input on LSU after accepting the job in Baton Rouge, Orgeron offered enthusiastic praise, but the call to return never followed.
“He hasn’t called me, which is good,” Orgeron said. “As a head coach, you’ve got to feel the lay of the land and do what’s best for you.”
One major obstacle is putting the staff together. A handful of assistants returned to Ole Miss for the College Football Playoff After Kiffin's chaotic exit from Oxford, he retained defensive coordinator Blake Baker, who bypassed a head-coaching opportunity at Tulane and became the nation’s highest-paid assistant at $3 million annually. With the defensive staff intact, a role for Orgeron appears unlikely.
Kiffin made it clear that Orgeron was on his mind, even joking in Orgeron’s Cajun accent during his introductory press conference.
