The Pittsburgh Pirates are opening up their wallets this offseason.
The question still remains: Will any free agents want what they have to offer?
The big name that at first seemed surprising as a Pirates pursuit is Kyle Schwarber. The free agent from the Philadelphia Phillies just hit 56 home runs in 2025 and seems to be at a tier that the Pirates don't normally find themselves in.
But reports indicated the Pirates wanted to go after Schwarber. They seem to be making a concerted effort to step up their spending game this offseason.
And it turns out they have made a legitimate offer to Schwarber.

How much did the Pirates offer Kyle Schwarber?
The Pirates' offer to Kyle Schwarber was for four years and $120 million, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
That would be more than three-times the most the Pirates have ever paid to a free agent.
"(It) still is not expected to be enough," Rosenthal writes. "To retain Schwarber — and beat out his other reported suitors, including the Red Sox, Reds and New York Mets — the Philadelphia Phillies could go to five years. The Athletic’s Tim Britton projected Schwarber will receive a five-year, $145 million deal."
Would Pittsburgh go higher? Rosenthal doesn't imply such a thing.
Until the Pirates actually land a free agent, fans will be a bit skeptical. But it's at least a little encouraging that Pittsburgh made a solid offer to Schwarber.
