Why Rockies released Warming Bernabel after red-hot MLB debut image

Warming Bernabel is unforgettable right from the beginning. Who could forget that name?

He also made an immediate impression on MLB when he was called up by the Colorado Rockies for his debut in July.

In Bernabel's first 28 at bats, he had 14 hits. That included three home runs.

Those that had noticed that may have been surprised to see that this weekend, the Rockies outrighted Bernabel off their 40-man roster, and he elected free agency.

So the talent-devoid Rockies have now lost Bernabel.

Why did the Rockies release Warming Bernabel?

The reason stems from what happened after that 14-for-28 start.

From that point on, Bernabel hit just.189 the rest of the season.

He had a concussion in September, too, which hampered the end to the season.

And he was a below average defender.

Bernabel will surely latch on somewhere. He was a.301 hitter in Triple-A in 2025.

But his pedigree isn't as good prior to that than some of his production would suggest.

If the Rockies decided he's not worth keeping around, that may not be a ringing endorsement of his MLB potential.

But a player that can go 14-for-28 right away in the bigs could have some value to someone.
