The Boston Red Sox are prioritizing pitching this offseason.
But one of their free agent pitchers is moving on to a different AL East club, the Tampa Bay Rays.
That guy on the move is the lefty Steven Matz.
The Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin reported the deal late Monday night.

Matz is coming off a season in which he had a 3.02 ERA working as a reliever.
He's spent 11 seasons in the major leagues.
Matz came to the bigs as a star southpaw starting pitcher prospect, arriving in the same era as Matt Harvey when the Mets had a lot of good young pitchers like Noah Syndergaard, too.
The lefty has also pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays and St. Louis Cardinals.
All told, Matz has worked to a 60-62 record and a 4.19 career ERA.
He has figured out in recent years how to use his sinker-balling repertoire more out of the bullpen. His strong ERA in 2025 was proof that Matz can be a useful pitcher.

The Rays do a great job of identifying pitchers with the profile that fits their goals and then using them in the way that optimizes their performance.
Matz apparently is one of those guys.
The Red Sox will just have to hope letting Matz go elsewhere in the division doesn't come back to haunt them too much.
