Hull KR head coach Willie Peters says he’s “incredibly proud” to have been named one of Australia’s assistant coaches for the upcoming Ashes Series against England.
The Sydney-born coach will join new Kangaroos boss Kevin Walters on the touchline when the three-Test series begins at Wembley on 25 October, marking the Ashes’ long-awaited return after 22 years.
Peters’ appointment comes at a time when his own club are preparing for a second consecutive Super League Grand Final appearance, with Wigan Warriors standing between the Robins and a historic treble.

“It’s a huge honour to be working with the Kangaroos for the upcoming Ashes,” Peters told Zero Tackle. “There’s so much history between Australia and England, and it’s great to see they’ve brought the Ashes back. I’m really proud to be involved and supporting head coach Kevin Walters. I’m looking forward to linking up with the side and preparing for the Ashes.”
Balancing club success with international duty
While the international appointment is a major milestone for the 46-year-old, Peters insists his immediate focus remains on Hull KR’s Grand Final clash at Old Trafford this weekend.

“For now, the main focus is this Saturday’s Grand Final with Hull KR and putting everything into this week,” he said.
Peters’ journey to the Kangaroos’ setup caps an impressive coaching rise. Before taking charge at Craven Park in 2023, he spent six years as an assistant in the NRL with Newcastle Knights, South Sydney Rabbitohs and Manly Sea Eagles.
Now, with silverware already secured in the Challenge Cup and the Super League Leaders’ Shield, his sights are set on helping Australia reclaim Ashes glory.
