The Ashes return to international rugby league after more than two decades. Australia faces England in a three-test series, kicking-off at Wembley in late October.

Australia's fullback race is under scrutiny. Dylan Edwards, who took over from James Tedesco in 2023, is the incumbent but recent form has cast doubt over his position.

Edwards' 2025 has been rocky after a slow start at club-level and a heartbreaking series defeat for New South Wales in this year's State of Origin.

More recently, Penrith's number one made a combined six errors in back-to-back golden point losses, including the infamous misread on Harry Grant as the little number nine scooted past Edwards for the match-winning try in round 24.

The Panthers' stalwart has impressive credentials: four premierships, Origin and test experience, but form and confidence are currently concerns.

Who should play fullback for Australia in the 2025 Ashes?

James Tedesco has excelled for the Roosters this season, scoring 11 tries, 18 try assists, 19 line breaks and running for 194 metres per game across 23 appearances.

His consistency, leadership and experience make him a strong candidate. He is also the current frontrunner to win the NRL's most prestigious individual award, the Dally M medal.

Reece Walsh is also in the frame as the Broncos build momentum towards September, however, five errors in Townsville during round 26 has certainly hurt his stock.

Tom Trbojevic was nominated for the Golden Boot in 2024, however has played mostly centre on the representative stage. A strong end to the season for Manly could reinsert his name into fullback talks.

Coach Kevin Walters has already declared that the position is still wide open at this stage, making the next month of football even more interesting.

Edwards offers premiership pedigree and prior international experience. What may count against him is that Tedesco boasts those same qualities but is coming off arguably a career-best season.

Whether it's Edwards, Tedesco, or a wildcard like Walsh or Trbojevic, Walters is likely to bring all four on tour because of their talent and positional versatility.
