Sam Burgess will remain head coach of Warrington Wolves despite a disappointing 2025 campaign that has left fans questioning his future.

The former South Sydney Rabbitohs enforcer, who took charge in 2024, has been publicly backed by chairman Stuart Middleton in a strongly worded statement.

Warrington reached the Challenge Cup final for a second straight year but their league form has been inconsistent, with Friday’s 25-12 defeat at home to financially troubled Salford Red Devils sparking speculation Burgess might not survive beyond this season.

Middleton backs Burgess to deliver

Burgess is contracted until the end of 2026, and Middleton has now confirmed he will stay on, urging supporters to judge the team by actions rather than words.

“Last week’s performance hurt us all. This season has not met the standards we expect,” Middleton wrote on the club’s social channels. “Sam Burgess has the full backing of the playing group. He will lead Warrington Wolves into 2026 as head coach. He is ambitious, driven and determined to put things right.”

The chairman acknowledged the frustration of the Wire faithful, adding: “Our supporters work hard all week and spend their hard-earned money to follow this club. We understand the sacrifices you make… You, the fans, deserve better. This club does not exist without you. Now it is down to us to earn your support back, not with words, but with performances that reflect what this town and community stand for.”

Warrington, who host Leigh Leopards this weekend, will close out their season with trips to Hull FC and Hull KR.
