Newcastle Knights superstar Kalyn Ponga could now be facing a major test of his loyalty, with reports suggesting a Sydney club has entered the race to secure his services.
Under a lucrative $1.4 million-per-season contract keeping him at the Knights until 2027, the fullback had earlier this year reaffirmed his commitment to the Hunter-based side.
However, since the 27-year-old signed his two-year extension, the Knights have sacked head coach Adam O’Brien, yet to appoint a successor, and questions have arisen over the positioning of key spine players.
This wave of changes and uncertainty could be making the club less appealing for the star fullback once his current deal expires.

Rumours about Kalyn Ponga leaving Newcastle have been swirling for a long time, with the Sydney Roosters frequently cited as a likely destination for the young spine player.
However, according to Triple M’s Beau, Cat and Woodsy Breakfast radio show, a different unnamed Sydney-based club has reportedly entered the race for his services.
“A high-profile Sydney NRL club are in secret conversations to sign Kalyn Ponga, and it's not the Sydney Roosters,” as per the Triple M Whisper on the Beau, Cat and Woodsy Breakfast radio show.
Neither the Knights nor Kalyn Ponga have publicly commented on the resurfacing claims that he is considering leaving the club.
If the reports are accurate, the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks could be the Sydney club attempting to lure Ponga, with their current fullback William Kennedy off contract this year.
Adding to the vacancy, promising youngster Kade Dykes is reportedly set to join the Bulldogs, leaving a crucial position open at the club.
