Jonah Pezet has formally informed the Melbourne Storm of his plans to test the open market, sparking a bidding war among NRL clubs eager to secure the signature of one of the game’s most promising young talents.
The 22-year-old had a clause in his contract allowing him to explore the market if the Storm extended veteran halfback Jahrome Hughes, and according to the Daily Telegraph, Pezet has opted to trigger that option.
Although the news is still fresh, rival clubs have already begun circling, with the Parramatta Eels, Canberra Raiders, Gold Coast Titans and North Queensland Cowboys all reportedly keeping a close eye on the rising star.
However, Pezet’s camp has stressed that he has not ruled out staying with Melbourne.

Despite limited opportunities behind Melbourne’s established halves pairing and most coming off the bench, Pezet has long been viewed as the heir apparent to Cameron Munster and Jahrome Hughes, having made just 19 NRL appearances across three seasons.
His class and talent was on full display in Melbourne’s 26–18 qualifying final victory over the Canterbury Bulldogs, showcasing why he’s considered one of the NRL’s brightest young halves.
Pezet isn’t the only Storm star on the move. His decision to test the market comes as powerhouse forward Nelson Asofa-Solomona reportedly confirms he’ll exit the club, missing a second straight Grand Final through suspension.
Star fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen is also expected to depart not just Melbourne, but the NRL entirely, heading to the rebel rugby union competition R360 next year — a move that could significantly reshape the Storm’s spine.
