Josh Hannay swings the axe, sacks three assistants in Hasler-era cleanout image

Newly appointed Gold Coast Titans coach Josh Hannay has wasted no time in stamping his authority, overseeing a dramatic overhaul of the club’s coaching ranks ahead of the 2026 season.

According to the Daily Telegraph, assistant coaches Jim Lenihan, Brett White and Michael Monaghan have been shown the door as Hannay begins reshaping the Titans’ football department.

The only assistant to survive the clean-out is Brad Davis, a former Gold Coast playmaker and current aide to outgoing coach Des Hasler.

The overhaul reflects the new coach’s determination to streamline the club’s coaching ranks, with reports suggesting that Hannay plans to cut the number of assistants from four to three, believing the previous structure was too bloated.

The 45-year-old, who signed a three-year deal last week to take over in November, has already begun discussions with two potential new assistants, with appointments expected ahead of the 2026 pre-season, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Lenihan departs after five years with the Titans, including a brief stint as interim coach following Justin Holbrook’s shock sacking in 2023.

Meanwhile, Brett White — a former Raiders assistant — and ex-Manly playmaker Michael Monaghan joined the Titans’ staff in 2023 following Hasler’s appointment on a three-year deal.

Before joining the Titans, White worked at the representative level as an assistant for both the NSW Origin team and the Australian Kangaroos under legendary coach Mal Meninga.

Monaghan previously coached alongside Hasler at the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles from 2018 to 2022, had stints at the Catalans Dragons in the Super League, and most recently served as head coach of the Newcastle Knights’ NSW Cup side.

As reported by the Daily Telegraph, Davis was the only assistant to survive the clean-out because Hannay values his approach and believes that under his leadership next year, Davis can take on an expanded and more “beefed-up role”.
