The NRL has unveiled American singer Teddy Swims as the headline act for the 2025 NRL and NRLW Grand Finals.

The Grammy-nominated star is best known for his global smash hit Lose Control, which has amassed almost four billion streams worldwide.

He also holds the record for the longest-running song on the Billboard Hot 100, remaining on the charts for 100 weeks since its release.

But it was ARLC chairman Peter V’landys who stole the spotlight with a cheeky jab at the AFL’s entertainment choice.

V’landys takes aim at Snoop Dogg call

While announcing Swims’ involvement, V’landys couldn’t resist a dig at the AFL’s decision to secure rapper Snoop Dogg for its grand final showpiece.

“We saw what the AFL got - what’s he called, Labrador or Poodle,” V’landys joked on The Today Show.

“I’m not sure - all I know is that it is a dog act. So we had to get better than that. We actually got a vocalist.

“None of this doof, doof stuff. This bloke can actually sing.”

V’landys doubled down by quipping: “He is very popular. It will beat the poodle.”

Teddy Swims ‘excited’ to perform

For Swims, the chance to perform at the NRL’s showpiece is a career highlight.

“I am so excited to be performing at the 2025 NRL Grand Final. Australia has always been a second home to me,” he said in a statement.

“Every time I am there I am overwhelmed by how welcoming the people are. I fall more in love with the culture and just everything about it.

“So, to be welcomed to perform one of the biggest nights in Australia is a huge honour.”

The 31-year-old will also help promote the NRL’s Las Vegas fixtures in 2026 as the league continues its push into the US market.

‘Perfect performer’ for grand final

NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo said Swims’ global reach and popularity made him the right choice for the code’s showcase night.

“Teddy Swims is one of the most exciting music talents in the world, making him the perfect performer for the NRL Grand Final day,” Abdo said.

“Teddy’s global appeal and connection with young audiences in Australia, the US and around the world matches our vision to grow rugby league globally.

“Grand Final day is a special event on the sporting calendar, capturing moments that last forever. Including a fresh superstar like Teddy Swims alongside some of the best male and female athletes in the world will take the entertainment experience to a whole new level.”

AFL under fire for Snoop Dogg pick

The AFL, meanwhile, continues to defend its call to engage Snoop Dogg for its grand final show.

Chief executive Andrew Dillon has been forced to publicly justify the move after backlash from fans and commentators.

With the NRL opting for one of the hottest voices in global music, V’landys is confident his code has won the entertainment battle.
