Former Roosters and Rabbitohs playmaker Luke Keary is set to cut short his Super League stint with struggling French outfit, Catalan Dragons.

Reports are Keary, 33, will depart the club at the end of the current season despite being contracted for a further 12 months.

Following a 231-game NRL career that has also included representative honours for NSW, Australia and Ireland, Keary delayed retirement at the end of the 2024 NRL season, moving to the south of France on a two-year deal.

However, the Perpignan-based Dragons have underperformed this season and—barely a month after long-time Catalans coach Steve McNamara was sacked—it seems Keary has had enough.

“Coming over I had really high expectations at Catalans,” Keary told the UK’s League Express.

“It’s been a challenge—one of the toughest periods I’ve gone through as a footy player.”

Arguably Keary’s most memorable performance since joining Catalan Dragons has come off the field, when he slammed the quality of the Super League competition in a media interview.

“I’ll go on the record saying (Super League) is in such a bad way, the game is horrendous over here, the games, they’re near unwatchable,” he declared.

Keary, who later apologised, was fined £1,000 for his comments.
