Brisbane Broncos’ premiership story wasn’t just written by those on the pitch. Former club stalwart Alex Glenn quietly became one of the team’s secret weapons in their surge to the 2025 NRL title, as the side’s unofficial hype man.

Glenn was often seen on the microphone during home games, working the crowd into a frenzy and lifting the atmosphere inside Suncorp Stadium.

His animated presence even made headlines during the preliminary final against Penrith, when he was spotted crouching behind captain Adam Reynolds as he lined up a match-winning conversion.

The spark that started it all

According to Wide World of Sports’ QLDER, the idea came directly from coach Michael Maguire, who urged his staff to “get Alex Glenn up and about” during the tense clash. Broncos director Darren Lockyer revealed that the tactic actually began months earlier, in round 16 against Cronulla.

“We were significantly behind, and the crowd started making a bit of noise, and they came back and won the game,” Lockyer said. “And Madge said in the press conference that played its part in the team winning that day. Ever since then, at the back end of the year, there's been this deliberate thing with Alex Glenn to get the crowd pumped up, and it works.”

Glenn, who experienced the highs and lows of the club’s past decade, from the heartbreak of the 2015 grand final to the 2020 wooden spoon, shared his emotions online after the Broncos’ triumph. In a heartfelt post featuring teammate Ben Hunt lifting the Provan-Summons Trophy, he wrote:

“Can't even put into words how much joy this picture brings me... You deserved every bit of this, and to do it at the club we both love to our core is a memory I'll cherish for the rest of my life.”
