Shane Flanagan will remain the head coach of the St. George Illawarra Dragons for at least the next two seasons, after the team announced they had extended him through to 2028.
Approaching the conclusion of his second season in charge of the Red V, Flanagan has overseen a period of significant change for the team, moving on from Origin stars Ben Hunt and Zac Lomax and bringing in veteran talents Valentine Holmes, Damian Cook, and Clint Gutherson.
While the team are yet to play finals footy under the 59-year-old, the team seems pleased with his progress and vision for the future, keeping him at the helm for another two years.
Dragons announce two-year extension for Flanagan
The Dragons will keep Shane Flanagan in charge for the next two seasons, officially announcing his extension Friday.
In doing so, the team endorsed his future plans for their direction, as they look to return to finals football following a seven-year drought.
"Shane has played a critical role in setting the foundation for where this club is heading," Dragons CEO Tim Watsford said in a statement.
"He’s re-instilled belief in our playing group, coaches and supporters together with reiterating the privilege of wearing the Red V."
"It’s a privilege to continue to coach the Dragons, a club built on such a rich history" Flanagan added.
"The playing group is full of talent and I’m excited by the prospect of realising success for the Red V over the coming years.
"It’s clear the club is setting structures and processes in place to deliver outcomes for years to come and to be entrusted by the board and management is something I don’t take for granted."
Currently sitting twelfth, Flanagan and the Dragons will hope to put together a strong run home, despite being already out of contention for the finals.
