Des Hasler has declared he will not be retiring from rugby league, despite parting ways with the Gold Coast Titans at the end of a turbulent stint.
The 64-year-old, regarded as one of the game’s greatest coaches, told the Sydney Morning Herald that he remains determined to continue his career after taking a short break.
“I really enjoy coaching and will survey the landscape once I’ve had a bit of a break,” Hasler said in his first interview since leaving the club.

“I’ll head back down to Sydney, assess everything and check out the lay of the land. We’ll see what happens going forward.”
‘It’s not retirement’
While many assumed his exit signalled the end of an era, Hasler was unequivocal about his intentions. “It’s not retirement,” he insisted.
The veteran coach also spoke warmly of his time on the Gold Coast, praising the Titans’ playing group despite his departure. “There’s nothing, in hindsight,” he admitted when asked about regrets.

“It’s been great to see players really develop here. Tino is a world-class leader on and off the field. Keano Kini has represented his country, JC [Jayden Campbell] is going to be a wonderful seven, AJ Brimson has had his best season of football, and there are many other players on the rise.”
Hasler’s exit clears the path for Josh Hannay, who will take over the Titans from 2026. But as far as Hasler is concerned, his own story in rugby league is far from finished.
