‘Not about to give up now’: Cody Ramsey set for Dragons exit but hoping to remain in the NRL image

Cody Ramsey looks set to leave St George Illawarra after being offered only a train-and-trial contract for 2026, but the fullback is determined to continue his NRL career despite strong interest from rival codes.

After nearly 900 days spent in hospital and rehabilitation, Ramsey returned to the field this year and has become one of the Dragons’ standouts in the NSW Cup.

His form has helped steer the side into Sunday’s grand final, with the 24-year-old tallying 11 tries, 73 tackle busts, 15 line breaks and 22 try assists while averaging more than 120 running metres a game.

“Cody fought so hard to get back”

While the Red V have been supportive during his long absence, Ramsey’s manager, George Ghazal, admitted the club is not planning to offer him a Top 30 or development contract.

“We can’t fault the club because they have been great to Cody since he was first diagnosed,” Ghazal told Wide World of Sports. “They kept paying him his NRL contract for the past two years and encouraged him to come back. But the game is a business, and it seems they don’t see a place for him next season… we get that.”

Ghazal confirmed there had been “interest from other NRL clubs, from Super League and even (the breakaway) Rugby R360 competition, so he has options.”

Despite the uncertainty, Ramsey’s resolve remains unshaken. “Cody fought so hard to get back… he’s not about to give up now,” Ghazal added.

The fullback will put contract talks on hold until after the NSW Cup finals, when he and his management will weigh up the next step in a career that has already defied the odds.
