Baker Mayfield was one of the NFL's most polarizing figures before he ever became a starter, but he might now be considered one of the league's best success stories.
Cast aside by the Browns in favor of Deshaun Watson and given one last chance in Tampa Bay after brief stints with the Panthers and Rams, Mayfield took the reins of the Buccaneers' offense from Tom Brady and ran with it, leading the organization to back-to-back division titles.
Tampa is where Mayfield has found a long-term home in the NFL, but he called other regions home before arriving in the NFL.
Here's what you need to know about Mayfield's roots and where he spent his college days.

Where is Baker Mayfield from?
Mayfield was born in Austin, Texas and was raised in the area surrounding the city.
While Austin is Texas Longhorns country, Mayfield actually grew up as an Oklahoma fan. He attended games with his parents, spurning local tradition by rooting against Texas. Mayfield's father played football at the University of Houston.
There is no NFL team in Austin, but Mayfield gets the chance to return to Texas whenever he faces the Texans or Cowboys, with Austin a few hours from Houston and Dallas by car.

Baker Mayfield high school
Mayfield attended Lake Travis High School in the Austin suburbs, emerging as a legitimate Division I prospect but struggling to attract high-profile offers.
Lake Travis produced a handful of other FBS quarterbacks during the 2010s, including Baylor's Charlie Brewer and SMU's Garrett Gilbert, the latter of whom spent time in the NFL. The school also produced current NFL standouts Garrett Wilson and Cameron Dicker along with Mayfield.

Where did Baker Mayfield go to college?
Mayfield received offers from a few Group of Five schools and one power conference school, at the time: Washington State. Rather than join the Cougars or attend FAU, which was under consideration, he was persuaded by his father to walk on at Texas Tech.
Not only were the Red Raiders in his home state, but they represented a chance to compete in the Big 12 alongside Texas and Oklahoma -- if he earned his way onto the field.
Mayfield did make it onto the field as a true freshman after incumbent QB Michael Brewer suffered a back injury before the 2013 season began. However, he attempted to transfer to Oklahoma after 2013. With rules more strict at the time, Texas Tech fought the decision, but Mayfield made the move to Norman and had to sit out the 2014 season.
Mayfield spent three seasons at Oklahoma as one of the best quarterbacks in the nation, winning the Heisman Trophy in 2017 after back-to-back top-five finishes. Despite concerns about his size, Mayfield rode that success to the top pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
