Cam Skattebo stats today: Giants RB shines in Tyrone Tracy Jr.'s absence vs. Chiefs image

Cam Skattebo has impeccable timing.

The New York Giants tailback wasn't the most heralded talent coming out of college. Yes, he was physical. Yes, he commanded attention of all those scattered across the front seven. But his intangibles -- namely his acceleration, straight-line speed and reduced catch radius -- appeared to limit his potential.

He's a natural showman, though. And when starting RB Tyrone Tracy Jr. went down with a shoulder injury late in the first quarter of New York's "Sunday Night Football" matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs, Skattebo responded with a bang, producing yards in bunches en route to a starring performance under the lights.

Here's what you need to know.

Tracy entered the game as New York's lead back. He looked a good bet to retain his place in the game's opening paces, swiftly recording seven carries for 29 yards as the Giants worked their way down the field.

Things changed with 1:43 left in the first quarter. Tracy crumbled to the ground after being driven out of bounds following a catch. He writhed on the turf for some time before coming to his feet while favoring his right arm.

Tracy was diagnosed with a right shoulder injury and made questionable for the remainder of his game. His understudy, Skattebo, quickly gobbled up his carries in his absence.

Skattebo had already recorded some fairly solid runs in the game's opening moments. With Tracy out of the picture, his reign continued.

The Arizona State alum fielded five carries in New York's penultimate drive of the first half. Three ended with aplomb -- a seven-yard gain, then an 11-yarder before capping off the lengthy drive with a 13-yard race through contact.

Skattebo was known for his bruising style in college. He showed that there was more to his game than aesthetics against Kansas City, gashing the Chiefs' vaunted defense one head shake at a time. Whether by air or ground, Skattebo was effective. And although the Giants fell short of victory on Sunday night, New York's newcomer certainly held his head high.

Skattebo made his presence felt while crashing into Kansas City's front seven on Sunday night. He turned would-be tacklers into dust with his physique, slaloming through the trenches to strike venom into the Chiefs' defense.

On his touchdown scamper, he displayed his speed, too. The 23-year old burst past his adversaries to find the end zone.

He even showed off his acrobatics during his subsequent celebration.
