What's wrong with Justin Herbert's hand? Explaining padded glove worn by Chargers QB vs. Eagles image

Coming into Week 14, the biggest question for the Los Angeles Chargers was whether quarterback Justin Herbert would be able to suit up against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Herbert suffered an injury to his non-throwing hand in the Week 13 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. After further tests, it was determined that he fractured his left hand and needed surgery. Doctors added a metal plate to help the healing, and the procedure was a success.

The Chargers didn’t take on the Eagles until Monday night, giving Herbert an extra day of rest and preparation. When he emerged from the locker room for early warm-ups, he was wearing a noticeable padded glove on his non-throwing hand.

Here’s more on why Herbert is wearing a glove on his non-throwing hand in Week 14 against the Eagles on “Monday Night Football.”

Why is Justin Herbert wearing padded glove against the Eagles?

Herbert fractured a bone in his non-throwing hand in the Week 13 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. The quarterback underwent surgery early in Week 14 and benefited from the extra day of rest that comes with playing on Monday night.

Herbert went through warm-ups and was wearing a padded glove on his left hand. Per the ESPN broadcast, it is a "padded splint on the outside of the hand," but leaves his palm "relatively free." During the pre-game, it remained to be seen how well, if at all, Herbert would be able to hand the ball off and go under center.

What happened to Justin Herbert?

Herbert was scrambling against the Raiders in Week 13. He was tackled, and the diving defender's helmet struck his left hand.

Herbert went to the locker room and was considered questionable to return. Backup quarterback Trey Lance came in for a handful of plays, but Herbert was able to return to the game and helped the Chargers to a 31-14 win over the Raiders.
