Before the NBA trade deadline last season, the San Antonio Spurs decided to trade for De'Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings despite not being in playoff contention. This move was made to be contenders for future seasons because Victor Wembanyama is ready to be one of the best players in the NBA.

Fox may not be ready to start the 2025 NBA season because of a hamstring injury. As for Wembanyama, he should be ready to go after suffering a blood clot last season that sidelined him after NBA all-star weekend. It is going to be interesting to see how often these two players will be on the court together during the 2025-26 NBA season. How often did they play together in 2024-25?

They Only Played Five Games Together Last Season

One of the biggest questions about the Spurs this season is "Can San Antonio overcome its lack of 3-point shooting around Victor Wembanyama?" Michael C. Wright of espn.com said,

"It's possible if the Spurs lean into one of their biggest strengths: the multitude of guards capable of attacking downhill to nail high percentage shots in the driving lanes. Wembanyama's gravity and willingness to shoot 3-pointers will consistently pull opposing bigs out of the paint, which should open driving lanes for slashers such as De'Aaron FoxStephon Castle and rookie Dylan Harper. It's also worth noting that Fox and Wembanyama played only five games together last season. Expect more lethality this season between the two in pick-and-rolls and improved outside shooting from Fox."

The Spurs will be able to win a bunch of games this season if Fox and Wembanyama are on the court together. They need to play more than five games together during the 2025-26 season. San Antonio are not championship contenders yet. What they need to prove this season is getting better and showing that the two of them can co-exist on the court at the same time.

If they can do that, then the future is bright for this organization. Of course, other players are going to have to contribute than those two. Wembanyama has a chance to be an all-star once again this season.  Fox is also capable of playing at an all-star level. If they have an effective pick-and-roll game, they should be better than 34-48 this season.
