Suns Monty Williams named NBA Coach of the Year: Complete list of head coaches to win the award image

On Monday, Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker was first to break the news that his head coach Monty Williams would be named the 2021-22 NBA Coach of the Year.

Just moments after the All-Star guard's tweet, The Athletic's Shams Charania confirmed Williams will take home the award.

The news doesn't come as much of a surprise after Williams led the Suns to the best record in the NBA at 64-18. Just one year after taking the Suns to the NBA Finals, Williams had Phoenix clicking on all cylinders as it cruised to the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.

The Suns had the league's fifth-best offensive rating (114.2) and third-best defensive rating (106.8), leading to the best net rating (7.5) in the NBA this season.

The Suns went 32-9 at home and on the road – each of which was the best mark in the league. Their 32-9 road record was tied for the fifth-best in NBA history.

Phoenix established its dominance early when it went on an 18-game win streak after the first four games of the season. The Suns never looked back from that point, only losing back-to-back games twice for the remainder of the season.

With Williams at the helm, the Suns have quickly turned from a franchise that missed the playoffs for a decade straight to a perennial title contender for the foreseeable future. In beating out the Miami Heat's Erik Spoelstra and Memphis Grizzlies' Taylor Jenkins, Williams was rightfully crowned as the 2021-22 NBA Coach of the Year.
