When the Dallas Mavericks traded away Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis last season, many NBA fans and Mavericks fans were shocked about the trade. A lot of Mavericks fans chanted for general manager Nico Harrison to be fired after the Doncic trade last season.
Dallas finished with a 39-43 record last season, and they missed the playoffs. Someway somehow, the Mavericks lucked there way into the number one overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and selected Cooper Flagg from the Duke Blue Devils. Harrison was able to make this selection. For now, he is the Mavericks general manager. If things go south for Dallas in 2025-2026, is there a chance that Harrison could be fired?
NBA Insider Believes That Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison Will Be Fired at Some point Down the Road
Sam Quinn of CBSSports.com was debating what trade was worse between the Micah Parsons trade and the Doncic trade. Well, he was making a case for both trades being bad. With that being said, there was something in the article that stood out. Quinn said about the Mavericks general manager,
"And that brings us to our final point here: the people who made the trades. Nico Harrison is a bad general manager... but he's a general manager. Mavericks ownership can fire him at any time. Eventually, Patrick Dumont is probably going to see the light and replace him. It might take a few years. Harrison's plan might need to fail first. But the person who made the trade isn't the person who's truly in charge of the team. He can be replaced.
Jerry Jones can't. He owns the team. He will presumably run it for the rest of his life. The Cowboys haven't made the NFC Championship Game since the 1995 season. We're now three decades removed from their last final four appearance, and Jones has been running the team throughout all of it. Sadly, questionable moves like the Parsons trade are just the norm for the Cowboys. No one will ultimately be held accountable if this trade fails."
With the Mavericks roster they currently have, they should be a playoff team. If Dallas misses the playoffs once again in 2025-2026 after making the NBA Finals two seasons ago, then Harrison could potentially be fired. However, if they have sustained success over the next few years, then there maybe no reason to fire Harrison. However, there is no doubt that he lucked into getting Flagg after trading away Doncic to the Lakers.
