This year's Bathurst 1000 will take place in December for the first time ever, as part of a six-day event.

The famous race has been shifted from its usual early-October date to December 5th, due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

December’s event will feature the 64th running of the Great Race since its origins at Phillip Island in 1960.

Here's everything you need to know about the 2021 Bathurst 1000.

WHEN DOES THE BATHURST 1000 START?

This year's Bathurst 1000 will take place on Sunday, December 5 at Mount Panorama.

It will be the 64th running of the famous race, and the first time it will ever be held in December.

Warm-ups are expected to start just after 9am with the race itself set to start at 12.15pm (AEDT) meaning it will finish sometime after 6pm.

WHY IS THE 2021 BATHURST 1000 BEING HELD IN DECEMBER?

Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19 throughout NSW, there would be no chance of fans attending the race in 2021 if it was held in its usual early-October slot.

Therefore, Supercars announced that it will move to early-December in a bid to allow fans into Mount Panaroma to watch the race.

Supercars CEO Sean Seamer said it was the best possible result for fans.

"I would like to thank the Mayor North, Rob Cameron at Repco and John McMellan at ARG for their collaboration over the past few weeks to put together what might be known as the best ever Repco Bathurst 1000," he said.

"It’s been a tough year for motorsport fans but we’re confident this is the recipe for the best possible end to the 2021 season."
