The New York Mets once had a 45-21 record during the 2025 MLB season, and they looked like one of the best teams in the sport. Ever since then, things have changed for this team, and they have been one of the worst teams in the sport over a three-month stretch.
As the final six games are on the horizon, this team has an 80-76 record and are tied for the final wild card spot in the National League with the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds own the tiebreaker over the Mets, and they longer control their own destiny. Along with those two teams, the Arizona Diamondbacks have a 79-77 record and are still alive for a playoff spot. If New York misses the playoffs, what would this mean for the franchise moving forward?
Missing the playoffs Would Be a Major Failure for the New York Mets
John Harper writes for SNY.tv about baseball. He got information from an MLB scout on Monday about what it would mean for this franchise if they missed the playoffs. The MLB scout said,
"If they don’t get there, there’s no way to sugarcoat it. With their payroll and the high expectations, missing a six-team postseason would be a major failure. But those young pitchers would give them something to hang their hat on as far as changing the conversation. They’ve been impressive, to different degrees. You need to see more but I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that potentially they give you a high-ceiling nucleus for a starting rotation."
Despite the issues down the stretch for the Mets, the bright part of this baseball team is Nolan McLean, Brandon Sproat, and Jonah Tong. The core of the starting rotation is set for years to come. What this franchise will need to figure out if they collapse down the stretch is if they are going to keep David Stearns and Carlos Mendoza around for another season or not.
Stearns has been horrible constructing the roster in 2025 outside of signing Juan Soto and Pete Alonso. Mendoza has had questionable managerial decisions this season as well. It would be a failure if the Mets missed the playoffs, but they have had bad luck as well. They are 0-67 this season when they trail entering the ninth inning.
They are the only team in the MLB this season to not win a game from behind in the ninth-inning or later. There is some time left for this team to win and get some help. The Chicago Cubs and the Miami Marlins will be the final two series for the Mets this year. If they make the playoffs, then anything can happen in the postseason. If not, it will be interesting to see what massive changes this franchise will make during the offseason.
