When Steven Cohen started to be the owner for the New York Mets, he had a vision of potentially winning a World Series title within the first three-to-five years of his ownership. Well, Cohen's fifth season of owning the team just concluded with another no playoff appearance.
They have missed the playoffs in 2021, 2023, and 2025. The Mets have made the playoffs in 2022 and in 2024. The furthest this team has gone is making the NLCS in 24 against the Los Angeles Dodgers and losing in six games. With another collapse now complete, there are going to be major changes made to the roster and coaching staff for the 2026 season. There will be no World Series title yet in his ownership tenure. They haven't won since 1986, and it is something that he and this fanbase is yearning for.
New York Mets Owner Steven Cohen Shares Heartfelt Message on Twitter After Missing the Playoffs
When the Mets were 45-24, they were one of the best teams in the MLB and potentially on their way to 90-100 wins. For some reason, they spiraled and finished with an 83-79 record. Pitching was one of the reasons why this team faltered. The addition of Juan Soto was great for them and was not the reason why this team missed.
It was disappointing to not see the Mets in the playoffs this year. The team owner went to Twitter on Monday and spoke about the team falling short of making the postseason in 25. He said,
"Mets fans everywhere. I owe you an apology . You did your part by showing up and supporting the team. We didn’t do our part. We will do a post-mortem and figure out the obvious and less obvious reasons why the team didn’t perform up to your and my expectations We are all feeling raw emotions today. I know how much time and effort you have put into this team. The result was unacceptable. Your emotions tell me how much you care and continues to motivate the organization to do better. Thank You to the best fans in sports."
He understands that the fans have invested into the team this season. Falling short of the postseason is inexcusable. Cohen has a lot of decisions to make with the Mets this offseason. Will David Stearns and Carlos Mendoza be back in 26? If they are, what other changes are made in the front office and the coaching staff?
New York is a team that is trying to win a World Series. It is going to be interesting to see what trades or free agent signings they will make this offseason. Two players that Cohen will look to bring back is first baseman Pete Alonso and relief pitcher Edwin Diaz.
