The Houston Astros won’t be playing at Daikin Park in October. However, there will be some activity at Daikin Park in Houston—or the icebox, as they call it.
Michael Shapiro of Chron.com reported this week that the Astros will undergo nearly $2.4 million in stadium renovations, mostly focused on upgrades to the premium clubs. As a result, the average fan might not see any benefits from these changes, at least based on current information.
Daikin Park will undergo $2.4 million renovations to the premium area
Shapiro reported that Chron obtained documents from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) revealing that the project will start on Monday and conclude sometime in March. According to the documents, the renovations are funded by the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, known as HCHSA. The Diamond Club will get an interior update.
"Work includes reconfiguration of existing kitchen and dishwash room, new team store, updated finishes and lighting in dining room and lobby areas, and air handling unit and vav box replacements."
Additional renovation work is also set to be underway at Daikin Park. Earlier in the year the Astros and HCHSA jointly funded roughly a $15 million renovation of the park's roof, including $3.4 million for "sunshade steel repainting on the permanent roof structures" and nearly $2.3 million to upgrade an electric system that was considered worn out. When the stadium was known as Minute Maid Park, it received an 18-million-dollar renovation. The renovation enhanced seating options, adding three new bar locations, four additional food stands, and a premium group seating area at field level, introducing the first and only field-level seating available at Minute Maid Park.
Daikin Park, home to the Astros, marked its 25th season in 2025. The downtown stadium opened in 2000, when retro-inspired ballparks gained popularity and indoor comfort became a Texas staple. The park is known for its signature left-field Crawford Boxes, a retractable roof, and a working train that runs above the outfield, a nod to Houston’s railroad history. The Astros’ ballpark ranks mid-aged among active major league stadiums, while Globe Life Field is one of the newest. Both stadiums feature retractable roofs suited for the Texas climate.
This is the first time since 2016 that Daikin Park, once known as Minute Maid Park, will not host postseason baseball. The Astros ended their legendary postseason run early this year.
