The Colorado Rockies drafted shortstop Ethan Holliday fourth overall in the 2025 MLB Draft. Ethan's dad, Matt Holliday, was also drafted by the Rockies.
Colorado is a team that is currently rebuilding, and they are looking for optimism for the future. Holliday is the number one prospect in the Rockies system, but it isn't going to be a few years until Rockies fans get to see him in Denver, Colorado. Where does he rank among the top prospects in all of baseball?
MLB Insider Believes that Colorado Rockies Shortstop Prospect Ethan Holliday is Already a Top 10 Prospect in the Sport
Jim Bowden of the Athletic ranked his Top 50 MLB prospects at the moment. Ethan with Holliday being drafted just less than two months ago, Bowden has the Rockies top prospect ranked number 10 on his Top 50 prospects list. Bowden said about Holliday already being the 10th best prospect in all of baseball,
"The Rockies were fortunate that Holliday fell to them at No. 4 in this year’s draft, as many analysts — including myself — thought he had the most potential of any player in this class. Holliday has tremendous leadership qualities and should in time develop into the face of the Rockies franchise. He’s power-over-hit right now and eventually could end up at third base. Regardless of his spot on the left side of the infield, he has the potential to become a middle-of-the-order impact bat."
There was some speculation that Holliday was going to be drafted at number one by the Washington Nationals, but they drafted shortstop Eli Willits instead. It is interesting that Holliday is ranked as the 10th best prospect in the MLB by Bowden. MLB.com has Ethan as the 17th best prospect in the MLB on the Top 100 prospects list.
He is only 18 years old and is currently in Single-A with the Fresno Grizzlies. The Rockies probably have no plans to rush his development. Holliday also bats from the left side of the plate, and he also throws right-handed. He is not projected to reach the MLB level until the 2029 season. There could be a chance that Holliday does make his MLB debut for the Rockies before then.
He has played in 15 games for Fresno to begin his professional career. Holliday has a .217 batting average with one home run and three RBIs, along with zero stolen bases. His on-base percentage is .329. It will be interesting to see if Holliday will begin the 2026 season in Single-A with Fresno or in High-A with the Spokane Indians.
