Two-and-a-half months after the action halted for a summer break, the Premier League is about to return for the 2023/24 season.

All 20 top-flight teams are in action across the opening four days of the campaign, including reigning champions Manchester City and newly-promoted clubs Luton Town, Sheffield United and Burnley.

Two teams who have qualified for Europe this season and two who are part of the group traditionally known as the 'Big Six' play each other in the opening round of fixtures.

The Sporting News takes a look at which game will be launching the programme and which matches will follow as the matches begin once again.

First Premier League game of the season: Who's playing?

Manchester City will visit Burnley before anyone else plays a Premier League game on the first weekend, representing a rendezvous for Cityzens legend Vincent Kompany with his former club.

A relative newcomer to management, Kompany guided the Clarets to promotion from the Championship with plenty to spare last season, making a hugely impressive start to his coaching career in England.

Kompany won the Premier League four times with City between 2012 and 2019, and he knows how difficult it is to stop their current crop after they hammered Burnley 6-0 in the FA Cup quarterfinals in March.

The manner of Burnley's promotion suggested they are capable of competing in the Premier League, and a more promising display in the fixture would give them encouragement even if they do not achieve an early upset.
