Socceroos vs Japan: When, where, squads, team news and how to watch World Cup qualifier image

The Socceroos need a win against Japan in Sydney on Thursday night to keep their hopes of qualifying directly for the 2022 World Cup alive.

Australia sit third in their qualifying group with two games remaining and are three points behind their opponents, who are second.

Japan started the group in shaky fashion but it's the Socceroos who have failed to hold their nerve lately.

Recent draws against China and Oman mean Graham Arnold's side need to win their last two games if they are any hope of avoiding the play-offs.

Japan claimed a crucial 2-1 win the last time these two sides met in October 2021.

A late own-goal from Aziz Behich saw Australia slip up with Japan subsequently finding real momentum in qualifying and are currently on a five-game winning run.

The Socceroos, meanwhile, have struggled since, claiming just one victory from their last four qualifiers.

Japan have had the edge over Australia in recent meetings with the Blue Samurai last losing to the green and gold in 2009 - a run of eight undefeated matches.
