Sam Kerr has become the Matildas' all-time record goalscorer after striking in Australia's 4-3 loss to the United States on Thursday night.

In the bronze medal match at the Tokyo Olympics, Kerr broke Lisa De Vanna's record after netting a superb equaliser in the 16th minute.

The Aussie star's 48th goal from 99 international appearances was set up by Caitlin Foord and sparked what would be a rollercoaster contest.

Though the USWNT would eventually hold on for a 4-3 win, the Matildas can still hold their head high after claiming their best ever finish at an Olympics

Kerr scored six goals across six matches at the Games to exit Tokyo with a new national record to her name but has previously stressed her fine form in front of goal is all down to her teammates.

"It doesn't matter who I'm playing against, where I'm playing, what minute it is, I really believe that my team will get it to me and that's been something through the whole tournament," Kerr said after the Matildas' win over Great Britain.

"Every goal I've scored has been because of amazing goal service. Every single goal that we've scored has been from something brewing from someone else."

Still only 27, the Chelsea attacker is poised to extend her record as the Matildas' top goalscorer in the years to follow with plenty more strikes set to come from the superstar.

Kerr is just one game shy of her 100th appearance for Australia with her goals-to-games ratio to date suggesting she'll take some catching at the top of the standings.
