After missing out on the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the Netherlands were playing at the 2022 tournament in Qatar eager to make up for lost time.
The Dutch are yet to win football's biggest tournament but have lost three finals, with their most recent defeat coming in 2010.
The Oranje also finished third in 2014, before dramatically failing to qualify for Russia four years ago.
They appeared to be in much better standing this time around, making it to the quarterfinals before their dream was finally ended in a penalty shootout defeat to Argentina.

Netherlands 2022 World Cup schedule
The Dutch kicked off their latest World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win against African giants Senegal, and put themselves in a great position to qualify for the last 16 with a 1-1 draw with Ecuador.
The Netherlands then made sure of topping their group with a comfortable 2-0 win over Qatar.
The USA awaited the Dutch in the Round of 16 after they edged past Iran 1-0 in their final group game, and despite putting up a battling performance, they were never a match for the Oranje.
Goals from Memphis Depay, Daley Blind and Denzel Dumfries guided Van Gaal's men to a 3-1 win, and a meeting with Argentina and Lionel Messi in the last eight.
They did things the hard way against the Albiceleste, falling behind 2-0 before Wout Weghorst came off the bench with two quickfire goals to level the match.
But having arguably done the hard work, the Dutch then failed in the penalty shootout when the pressure told, as Argentina came through 4-3 for a spot in the semifinals.
