Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has been crying out for a central defender even before the season started, following the injury to Levi Colwill.

The 22-year-old defender leaves a major hole in the backline while he recovers from his ACL injury.

In the absence of Colwill, Chelsea have looked shaky at the back and conceded 12 goals in eight games across all competitions.

Chelsea’s defensive problems got worse on the weekend as Trevoh Chalobah was shown a straight red card for the denial of a clear goal-scoring opportunity against Brighton.

Now, Maresca will have his task cut out as he looks to name two central defenders for the Champions League game against Benfica on Tuesday night.

In this scenario, the news that the Blues have set their sights on signing a new central defender in the January transfer window should be music to Maresca’s ears.

Chelsea contact Marc Guehi’s agent regarding potential January move

Journalist Simon Philips has reported via Substack that Chelsea have made new enquiries this week to signal their interest in signing Crystal Palace and England star Marc Guehi.

Reportedly, the Blues camp have once again made contact with the agents of Guehi after links in the summer.

It is explained that they are trying to revive a transfer deal for January, where he would be much cheaper than he would have cost during the previous window.

Phillips adds that even though Chelsea made enquiries for the 25-year-old Palace defender in the summer, Liverpool were pushing the hardest to get him before he stayed at Selhurst Park.

Palace would rather sell Guehi in January than lose him for free when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The impressive centre-back, who developed in the Chelsea academy, wasn’t overly keen on a return to Stamford Bridge. It has not been completely ruled out, though, as the Blues and Tottenham circle.

Chelsea’s interest in trying to re-sign Guehi makes perfect sense as they need a defender who can lead from the back.
