The group stages at the Grand Slam of Darts concluded on Tuesday evening, with Michael van Gerwen amongst the players to book their last 16 places on a frantic night in Wolverhampton.

MVG knew he would have to perform well at WV Active in order to deny Gary Anderson getting out of a group for the first time in 18 appearances at the Slam, and he did just that, averaging over 108 in a superb 5-2 win in their Group G encounter.

That win clinched top spot for the Dutchman, with Niko Springer ending in second, as a result of Beau Greaves’ 5-3 win against the German. The three-time World Champion was 3-0 down, but took out 134 en route to five straight legs that sealed her first points of the event.

Group F was where the drama was expected, and Wessel Nijman held up his end of the bargain by hammering Lisa Ashton 5-0 to advance in second place.

The win meant Nijman would draw Luke Littler in the last 16, as Josh Rock took a 5-2 win against Gian van Veen that meant he would be in round two alongside Nijman.

Luke Littler went through the motions to end his Group E stint, easing past Daryl Gurney in a 5-1 success.

Second place went to Connor Scutt, as he took a 5-3 win against Karel Sedlacek to seal his passage into the last 16.

Another surprise second round player will be Lukas Wenig, and the German impressed again, turning back the challenge of Cam Crabtree as he dominated in a 5-1 win that saw him top Group H.

Danny Noppert ended in second, as Jonny Clayton shaded a consolation win in a deciding leg in their meeting. That result meant that ‘The Freeze’ will be up against Michael van Gerwen in round two.Wp:paragraph
