India have kept their chances of winning their T20 international series against Australia alive, after tying the series up 1-1 in Hobart with a five-wicket victory.

Arshdeep Singh returned to the lineup for the tourists, tearing apart Australia's top order, taking 3-34 from four overs, which included the two important dismissals of Travis Head and Marcus Stoinis. Australia set a score of 187 for India to chase, which they did with nine balls to spare.

The Aussies saw some highlights with the bat, led by T20 specialist Tim David who smashed 74 runs from 38 balls.

The series now heads to Queensland, where the two remaining fixtures will be contested at the Gold Coast and Brisbane. Australia will be hoping Glenn Maxwell is fit for the fourth match.

Australia vs. India - 3rd T20I - Updates, commentary, highlights

Player of the match:  Arshdeep Singh is awarded player of the match honours in his return, after taking figures of 3-34 from four overs. He got the important dismissals of Travis Head, Josh Inglis and Marcus Stoinis.

18.3 overs: GAME OVER!  Sean Abbott was Australia's most expensive bowler tonight, and the winning runs will come at his expense. Jitesh Sharma hits a four for the win, as India tie the series up at 1-1, thanks to a five-wicket victory.

18th over:  India were looking to put away the game that over, but we move into the final two. Five required.

17.1 overs: DROPPED!  Oh no! Australia's last chance to save the game goes down, as Mitch Owen falls and drops the catch, sparing Jitesh Sharma.

17th over:  Matt Kuhnemann had been Australia's most economical over for the night, but his final over goes for 11, and India are now marching towards victory. Nearly got the wicket of Jitesh Sharma early in the over, but Nathan Ellis was unable to make the catch in the outfield.

16th over:  Australia's best bowler for the night, Nathan Ellis, is done, collecting figures of 3-36 from four overs. His last goes for eight, keeping the door slightly ajar for Australia.

15th over:  After a massive over for India, Xavier Bartlett is able to bite back, picking up a wicket and only allowing seven runs. He's bowled his four overs, bowing out with solid figures of 1-30.

14.2 overs: WICKET!  Tilak Varma had settled in nicely with some composed batting, but looks to get creative with the ramp shot and Josh Inglis won't have an easier catch in his life. (IND 5-145)

14th over:  A rough night for Sean Abbott gets worse. Some tight bowling from Nathan Ellis and Kuhnemann is undone with 16 runs from the last three balls of the 14th over. Washington Sundar the man to deliver the blows, a luxury to have a power hitter like him enter at number six. Game starting to get away from Australia now.

13th over:  Kuhnemann has been consistent with the ball, again allowing just seven from it. Pressure starting to mount a bit on India, but still two very strong batsmen out there.

12th over:  Nathan Ellis keeps Australia alive with an important wicket. Washington Sundar arrives at the crease an almost instantly delivers a six.

11.1 overs: WICKET!  Nathan Ellis is making things happen for Australia, his bouncer catching Axar Patel off-guard, and Bartlett chases it down for a diving catch. It's Ellis' third wicket. (IND 4-111)

11th over:  Finally an economical over for Australia, as Kuhnemann's keeps the Indians to just six runs. Some good running from that India though, but Australia will be hoping for more of that, plus some wickets.

10th over:  India continue to get the runs ticking over, as Xavier Bartlett's third over goes for 10. 82 runs required now for the tourists with still half an innings to play.

9th over:  Bringing Matt Short into the attack seemed to have been effective for Australia, after going for just seven runs from the first five balls. But a six on the last ball was a devastating blow, as India start to close in on 100.

8th over:  A good over on the surface for Australia as they dismiss Suryakumar Yadav, but still 11 runs coming from it. Need to tighten up, with India continuing to bring down the required run rate.

7.3 overs: WICKET!  That's a big one for Australia, as Marcus Stoinis comes into the attack and gets the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav, who was looking dangerous. Ends up popping it up to Nathan Ellis. (IND 3-76)

7th over:  India get their first taste of spin as Matt Kuhnemann comes into the attack for the Aussies. Pretty efficient over, although Suryakumar was able to find the boundary from the last ball.

6th over:  The powerplay comes to an end for India, and they've used it well, going at more than 10 runs an over. Despite the two wickets falling, they're in a good position to chase down 187.

5.3 overs: WICKET!  Shubman Gill is trapped in front of the stumps by Nathan Ellis, and is gone LBW. India loses a review in the process. (IND 2-61)

5th over:  Sensing a captain's knock is coming. Suryakumar Yadav has come to the crease and is immediately having his way, clearing the boundary twice and making it look effortless. Meanwhile, Sean Abbott is struggling early with the ball, with a front-foot no ball evidence of that.

4th over:  The captain, Suryakumar Yadav, comes to the crease following the dismissal and almost immediately clears the rope.

3.3 overs: WICKET!  Australia get the danger man, with Abhishek Sharma forced to walk after 25 runs from 16 balls, including four boundaries. (IND 1-33)

1st over:  A no ball starts proceedings, before Abhishek Sharma clears the rope. Nine runs off the first.

India innings

Australia ends up putting up a strong score, thanks to steady performances from Tim David and Marcus Stoinis. India will need 187 to win.

20th over: WICKET!  Australia's innings come to an end, with Marcus Stoinis dismissed in the final over. A solid late knock sees him dismissed for 64, helping propel Australia to a final score of 186.

17.1 overs: WICKET! OVERTURNED!  Arshdeep Singh back into the attack, but the wicket of Marcus Stoinis is overturned!

16th over: India's star batsman Abhishek Sharma has a go with the ball, giving two boundaries, which arguably should've been avoided if not for some poor fielding by the Indians.

15th over:  Varun Chakravarthy's night with the ball also comes to an end. Struggled bowling to Tim David (who didn't?), but outside of that, a brilliant night with the ball for Varun, as he takes two important wickets.

14th over:  Marcus Stoinis hits a four, but then not much else to report from Axar Patel's final over. His night with the ball ends with figures of 0-35.

13th over: WICKET!  India's suffering comes to an end, sort of. Just as Marcus Stoinis gets going with back to back sixes, Tim David's brilliant knock finally comes to an end, as Tilak Varma takes his second catch of the match along the boundary. India will be relieved with that one. (AUS 5-118)

12th over:  More Tim David magic from that over. I might be able to just copy and paste that sentence for the rest of the innings.

11th over:  For as good as Varun Chakravarthy has been, he's yet to work out Tim David... Yet. What else is there to say about Tim David? The crowd may have to start wearing helmets with the way he's hitting the ball, especially off spin. He looks on target for a century in front of his home fans.

10th over:  We've reached the halfway point of the innings. No wickets lost for Australia there.

9th over:  A massive over from Varun Chakravarthy, and momentum is right back with the Indians. Great tug of war affair so far.

8.4 overs: HAT-TRICK DENIED  Marcus Stoinis safely pushes Varun Chakravarthy's hat-trick ball to the leg side, denying the hat-trick.

8.3 overs: WICKET!  On a hat-trick! Varun Chakravarthy follows up a wicket with another by cleaning up Mitch Owen's middle stump. Owen came out to a roaring ovation in front of his home fans, but the mood was a lot more sombre as he heads back to the sheds. (AUS 4-73)

8.2 overs: WICKET!  Mitch Marsh tried to match David and clear the rope, but to no success. Varun Chakravarthy gets the wicket, as Marsh hits it down the throat Tilak Varma. (AUS 3-73)

8th over:  Not a tougher job in the world right now than bowling to Tim David (apart from maybe trying to watch and type about it at the same time). Making it look easy and effortless against this Indian attack. Hitting boundaries for fun as he brings up a half century from just 23 balls, as well as a thousand T20 international runs. Mitch Marsh doing his job by getting his partner on strike.

7th over:  Tim David's eyes must light up when he sees a spinner. Two more sixes off spin this over, this time from the bowling of Axar Patel. As the commentators have noted, it's not that often we see Tim David get this much time to bat in T20, but wow he looks comfortable. He could be in for a big, big score. Mitch Marsh has the best seat in the house.

6th over:  Washington Sundar puts down Tim David early in the over, which might be costly with how David has emerged from the sheds. Finds the boundary again that over, and is seeing the ball beautifully as he moves to 26. Powerplay now over for the Aussies.

5th over:  Varun Chakravarthy enters the attack, much to the liking of Tim David. Two boundaries including a six off the first two balls, before Varun is able to slow the run rate, allowing just one run from the final four balls of the over.

UPDATE:  Could that be the last we've seen from Travis Head with the bat this series? Reports over the weekend suggested Head was considering pulling out for the final two games of this T20 series, as he looks to turn his attention towards the Ashes later this month.

4th over:  Four overs gone so far, each has gone for exactly six runs. Some tight bowling from Jasprit Bumrah there, keeping the run rate down apart from David hitting a fine shot to the off-side for four.

3rd over:  Arshdeep Singh is shaping up to be the Josh Hazlewood of this match. Already ripped through of Australia's top batsmen in Head and Inglis. Still has two overs left to bowl, will there be any more victims?

2.3 overs: WICKET!  Arshdeep Singh strikes again, this time the new man at the crease Josh Inglis has to depart, as his shot finds Axar Patel deep in the field. (AUS 2-14)

2nd over:  Jasprit Bumrah enters the attack, and after Marsh attacks him early, is fairly efficient the rest of the over.

1st over:  Arshdeep Singh given the ball to start over Jasprit Bumrah, and it pays dividends. Gets the danger man Head, who already found the boundary in the opening three balls.

0.4 overs: WICKET!  Travis Head has to go early. New to the lineup, Arshdeep Singh strikes instantly, sending Head on his way after he skies a ball to India's captain, Suryakumar Yadav. (AUS 1-6)

Australia Innings

7:10pm:  We're just a few minutes away from the opening ball.

7:00pm:  An interesting out for India tonight is Harshit Rana. Aside from Abhishek Sharma, Rana was the only batsman to score in double figures for India at the MCG, after he came in at seven and produced a steady 35, before the tourists were bowled out for just 125. His figures with the ball were less impressive, after he went 0-27 from just two overs. Still, bit stiff to be left out tonight if form is the reason.

6:55pm:  While the skies are clear and the temperature is warm, there is a fair bit of wind circulating at Bellerive Oval. Be interesting to see how that affects the bowlers in particular.

6:50pm:  India have made three changes as they look to keep their chances of winning this series alive.

IN: Jitesh Sharma (wk), Arshdeep Singh, Washington Sundar

OUT: Sanju Samson, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav

Meanwhile, Australia have just one change, as Sean Abbott replaces Josh Hazlewood in the attack. Interestingly, there is no Glenn Maxwell tonight.

6:47pm: INDIA WIN (the toss)!  India have finally won a toss! Who knows the last time that happened. Suryakumar Yadav elects to bowl first, meaning Australia will bat first for the first time this series.

6:30pm:  Australia won match two of this series in dominant fashion, but largely thanks to Josh Hazlewood. The veteran pace bowler was player of the match at the MCG, collecting figures of 3-13 from four overs. Sean Abbott is likely replacement, but it'll be hard for him to replicate such a display. Hazlewood's absence alone could be enough to tilt the odds in India's favour.

6:15pm:  It looks set to be a perfect night for cricket. Warm weather all day in Hobart, and it looks like any rain is set to wait until tomorrow morning, meaning we should be uninterrupted for the second game in a row!

6:00pm (AEDT): A pivotal third game of this T20 international series between Australia and India sees us head to Hobart. A loss for India already makes their chances of winning the series outright impossible. Plenty on the line here.

Australia vs. India 3rd T20I XIs, team news

Glenn Maxwell, originally due back for the third game of this series, was held off for this clash in Hobart. Would think he makes his way back for the final two games as the Aussies seek to win the series outright.

Josh Philippe  was stiff to make way for Matt Short in the third game, after being dropped from the side despite having no involvement in the first match due to it being called off so early. If Maxwell isn't quite cherry ripe, perhaps he could be recalled later in the series, if Short doesn't perform.

After tearing through India's top order in the second game, Australia will have to do without defending player of the match Josh Hazlewood, with the 34-year-old due to sit out the remainder of the series as he turns his attention to the test side. Sean Abbott  takes his spot in the side as the only change.

Australia XI:  Mitch Marsh (c), Travis Head, Josh Inglis (wk), Matt Short, Tim David, Mitch Owen, Marcus Stoinis, Nathan Ellis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Xavier Bartlett, Sean Abbott.

India made three changes for the third match of this T20 international series, as Sanju Samson, Harshit Rana and Kuldeep Yadav make way for Jitesh Sharma, Arshdeep Singh and Washington Sundar.

India will desperately be hoping Abhishek Sharma can be supported at the top of the order. At the MCG, five of their top six scored less than 10 runs, with Sharma being the exception. Ironically, the only other Indian to score in double figures at the 'G, Harshit Rana, was dropped for this game.

On the bowling front, Jasprit Bumrah  will look to deliver more magic with the ball, as he chases 100 T20 international wickets. He is currently two away from triple digits.

Meanwhile, the visitors are expected to be without Nitish Kumar Reddy for at least another game, with the hope he can return later in the series.

India XI: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Shubman Gill, Tilak Varma, Abhishek Sharma, Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy, Shivam Dube, Jasprit Bumrah, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Arshdeep Singh, Washington Sundar
