Ashes fourth Test: Updates, scores, highlights and results - Australia v England at the SCG image

England held on for the most dramatic of draws after a tense final day at the SCG, and in doing so avoided the humiliation of an Ashes whitewash.

It came down to the final over of the match under lights with James Anderson and Stuart Broad at the crease, Steve Smith bowling some rare leg break and the rest of his teammates crowding the stumps to hunt down the final wicket for Australia's victory.

Earlier, Pat Cummins seemed to have catapulted Australia into the box seat with two wickets inside three balls with 17 overs remaining, before Scott Boland dismissed first innings century-maker Jonny Bairstow.

It left bowling trio Jack Leach, Broad and Anderson to fight for an unthinkable draw for England, before Smith dramatically entered the attack and took his first Test wicket in over five years to dismiss Leach.

Anderson and Broad then endured the final two overs of the day without loss to mark a memorable Ashes draw.

Australia will be ruing the 12 overs they lost due to rain delays on Sunday, which could've been the difference for the hosts, but it was the fifth time a Test has been drawn at the SCG in the last eight matches at the famous ground.

Here's how the draw in the fourth Ashes Test in Sydney happened.

Thrilling finish epitomises the exhilaration of the last wicket draw

The daylight was fading. The floodlights were on.

Pat Cummins, still new to the captaincy role, wanted to keep bowling the hero of the MCG here at the SCG.

But the umpires conferred and concluded there wasn’t enough light for Scott Boland to bowl.

Any slim hopes of an England victory had faded long ago, they were eight wickets down and they had three overs left to cling on for a draw that would remove the ignominy of a series whitewash from a dismal tour.

Pat Cummins defends critical declaration call after agonising SCG draw

Australian captain Pat Cummins holds no regrets over his late declaration on day four after England toughed out a gripping draw in the fourth Ashes Test.

Explaining his thinking over the decision to declare when he did on day four, Cummins said he felt the 388 run target would tempt England into chasing their first victory of the series, thereby helping Australia's search for quickfire wickets.

"I thought 110 or so overs at that rate still gave them a bit of a cherry (to chase) if a couple of batters got in," Cummins told reporters after the draw in Sydney.

"I wanted (to set England) about three and a half an over.

"I thought the wicket was not playing too many tricks, and I thought if they batted really well then 350 was pretty achievable out there so I wanted to give us enough time (to bowl them out).

"And having the luxury after the way Greeny (Cameron Green) and Usman (Khawaja) batted to have enough runs in the bank that we could effectively attack for those whole 110 overs."
