Nicola Olyslagers' love affair with the Japan National Stadium has continued, with the Aussie high jumper taking out the gold medal in the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

In the same arena Olyslagers finished with a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, this time with a packed crowd, the 28-year-old went one better, being the only woman to clear the 2.00m mark.

The result continues Australia's strong performances in the event, with Eleanor Patterson having claimed the title in 2022, while both women were on the podium two years ago in Budapest.

Patterson finished equal-fifth this time around in Tokyo, with world record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine sharing the bronze with Serbia's Angelina Topic, behind Poland's Maria Zodzik in second.

Having cleared the marks of 1.93, 1.97 and 2.00 on the first attempts, Olyslagers missed all three at 2.02, but Zodzik was the only other competitor to have successfully jumped 2.00, on her third attempt, seeing Olyslagers take out the gold on countback.

"I was jumping tonight and I realised in 2017 I came dead last, I didn't clear the starting height," Olyslagers said after the rain-affected final.

"I've seen year-by-year, just a gradual progression up.

"But then coming last, I had so much peace because I knew that my performance didn't determine my identity and my value.

"So then coming in as number one, the pressure was off.

"I knew if you can't lose anything when you come last, then you can't gain anything if you come first, so let's go out and do it."

Olyslagers said the significant rain delays during the final may have played into her favour.

"The lesson we learned from Lausanne was that you don't change anything when it rains," she added.

"That's what my competitors tried to do, they tried to add a bit of extra effort and I learned that in Lausanne.

"Unfortunately, I did that as well for the 2.02."

The result sees Australia finish the World Athletics Championships with one gold, and three bronze medals (Kurtis Marshall - pole vault, Mackenzie Little - javelin, Jess Hull - 1500m).
