When is Super Bowl 2020? Date, location, odds, halftime show and where to watch in Australia

Though the date and location for the Super Bowl changes every year, the borderline unhealthy fixation on America's biggest professional sporting event is a constant. In 2020, when the NFL's 100th season ends with Super Bowl 54, that domestic and global attention will turn to Miami.

The Super Bowl in 2020, the game that will crown an NFL champion for the 2019 season, is scheduled to take place Monday, Feb. 3 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. That stadium, of course, is home to the Miami Dolphins, one of the NFL teams we know will not be playing in the Super Bowl in 2020.

WHEN IS SUPER BOWL 2020?

Super Bowl 54, also known as Super Bowl LIV, is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 3, 2020. The official kickoff time will be determined at a later date, but the ballpark of 9:30am AEDT  has become the traditional start time for the Super Bowl.

Every Super Bowl since 2003 has taken place during the first week of February. From 1967-2003, all but one Super Bowl took place in January.

The Super Bowl in 2020 will mark the second time a Super Bowl has been played on Feb. 3. On the same date six years ago, the Seahawks dominated the Broncos in New York to win Super Bowl 48.

WHERE CAN I WATCH SUPER BOWL 2020 IN AUSTRALIA?

It's a Monday and, if you're in the business of starting the week off right, you'll don your finest mesh jersey and join the masses for a quiet-ish beer while watching the Super Bowl.

Sneaking out for a business meeting for a few hours is also acceptable.

Strap yourself because The Crafty Squire has one helluva deal: $40 will get you bottomless bloody Mary's from kick-off until the end of the game. That's a session.

The game will be broadcast over the 24 screens with doors open from 8am and breakfast from 9am.

THE PROVINCIAL HOTEL

Located in the heart of Brunswick Street's shopping, dining and nightlife precinct. Doors open at 9am with Jumbotron action on the rooftop and 1kg buckets of southern fried chicken a mere tenner. Bookings are essential.

NEWMARKET HOTEL

$1 wings in the Inkerman Bar, with $30 Budweiser buckets. Yes, the answer is yes, if you're looking for fun in St Kilda.

THE HAWTHORN HOTEL

THE STAR

Sydney's casino does two things very well: completely eradicating any concept of time and live sport. The 24/7 Sports Bar offers short lineups for beers, copious screens to watch and food that never makes you question why; just how much can be consumed.

Sporting Globe has two locations in Queensland: Robina and Chermside. VIP booths are sold out at both locations, but there are still plenty of viewing options available with the 50+ screens to feast your eyes on.

BUFFALO BAR

Brisbane CBD's Buffalo Bar is slinging $20 Burger & drink combos all day. There's early access for reservations from 8am, with everyone else through the door at 9am sharp.

ACT

Bleachers, in the old Commonwealth Bank underneath the Melbourne building, is offering a deal that'll make you feel like you're fleecing the joint and its 24 TV screens.

They have several different options on offer, but the $30 2kg wings stands out.

For the game, $40pp secures entry, a gauranteed seat, merch and a drink on arrival.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Bad news, pigskin lovers: if you haven't got a ticket yet, The Lion is all booked out. No need to fret, though: there are still plenty of options around the CBD and surrounding suburbs to cater to your needs.

The Original Cooper's Alehouse is back for more this year, with doors opening at 08:30am. The casino's Grandstand Bar will deliver all the trimmings, as usual, while a little further out in Henley's Beach you can warm up your throwing arm with $6 pints and then, at half-time, wow the masses in a throwing competition.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

The Sporting Globe's three WA locations are spread across Belmont, Mandurah and Rockingham. Mandurah and Rockingham still have restaurant seating available - assuming you've scored a ticket - but all three venues are accepting walk-ins for their beer garden and bar areas.

Grab a ticket and start planning what sustenance you'll devour during the game.

NORTHERN TERRITORY

It's Hotel Darwin; it just has to be. It holds institution status in the Top End - and with good reason.

TASMANIA

Wrest Point's Casino bar is a safe option but a new contender has emerged in 2020, the Queens Head Hotel celebrating a Patriots-free event with doors opening from 10am.

WHERE IS SUPER BOWL 2020 BEING PLAYED?

The Super Bowl in 2020 will be played in a city that's no stranger to America's biggest game. But the venue will be a fresh addition to Super Bowl history.

Super Bowl 54 will be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., a city located in north-central Miami-Dade County roughly 25 kilometres from central Miami. The stadium, home to both the Miami Dolphins and the Miami Hurricanes, was selected as the host venue for the Super Bowl in 2020 in part because of its warm location, but also because of recent renovations.

The NFL made South Florida the host of Super Bowl 54 back in 2016, when Miami competed against Atlanta, New Orleans, Tampa and Los Angeles to secure the big game and when Hard Rock Stadium's renovation project was completed.

While the stadium’s seating capacity was reduced from 75,000 to 65,000, the renovation featured new video boards, suites and seating pods.

“We were confident. It was definitely our most competitive bid ever,” said chairman of the Super Bowl host committee Rodney Barreto at the time. "A $450-million-plus enhancement to the Dolphins’ stadium. A budget of cash and incentives valued at more than $40 million. A warm weather destination that always delivers. Always.

"We are truly thankful to Mr. Stephen Ross, owner of the Miami Dolphins, for all his support and assistance throughout this process."

Added Miami-Dade County mayor Carlos Gimenez: "I can’t think of a better place to host the Super Bowl than right here in our world-class community. Miami has hosted more Super Bowls than any other city, and it’s clear why. This is the place to live, work and play, and hosting the Super Bowl at Dolphins’ stadium once again serves as further evidence that Miami is a major event community.”

Indeed, the Miami area already has hosted 10 Super Bowls, and its 11th will break a tie with New Orleans for the most in the country. (New Orleans, though, will create another tie when it hosts Super Bowl 58 in 2024.)

Now called Hard Rock Stadium, the venue the Dolphins call home originally was named Joe Robbie Stadium when it opened in 1987. It has been renamed seven times since and has hosted five Super Bowls, with the old Miami Orange Bowl having hosted South Florida’s other five Super Bowls.

WHAT ARE THE BETTING ODDS FOR SUPER BOWL 2020?

No team has ever played a Super Bowl in its own city. That won't happen in 2020, as the Dolphins failed to make the playoffs.

Because the 49ers had no trouble with the Packers in the NFC championship game, opening odds for Super Bowl 54 actually were posted during the second half of the game in San Francisco.

The Chiefs opening as slight favorites over the 49ers in the Super Bowl is consistent with Kansas City entering championship weekend as the favorite among the four teams that were still alive.

FUTURE SUPER BOWL LOCATIONS

When the NFL considers sites for future Super Bowl locations, many requirements must be met by potential cities, their venues and their accommodations. Stadium quality is among the priorities, which is why several of the next five Super Bowls will be played in new or recently renovated stadiums.

That’s why Minnesota was awarded Super Bowl 52 back in 2018, after all; same for Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta, Super Bowl 54 in Miami and Super Bowl 56 in Los Angeles. Weather is also being a factor when the NFL considers future Super Bowl locations.

That will be the case again in 2020, when the Super Bowl will be played in a recently renovated stadium and in warm weather. Below are the sites the NFL has pinned as future Super Bowl locations.

SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW PERFORMERS 2020
