Hawthorn have addressed the storm surrounding reports of a private meeting between coach Sam Mitchell and Essendon captain Zac Merrett, with club president Andrew Gowers insisting they will not apologise for exploring ways to strengthen their list.
Merrett, who still has two years left on his deal at Tullamarine, is believed to have sat down with Mitchell earlier this week.

The revelation has blindsided the Bombers and left teammates “bitterly hurt”, while questions linger over whether the midfielder will attend Essendon’s Best and Fairest function in October.
‘We make no apologies’
Speaking on SEN Sportsday, Gowers made clear that Hawthorn will continue pursuing opportunities despite the controversy. “We make no apologies for wanting to get better and improve,” he said.
“I know this has become a big story over the last day or two, but we are realists. We know other clubs are talking to our players, and this story has become big, I understand it, I get it.”

While refusing to confirm the reported meeting between Mitchell and Merrett, Gowers suggested supporters should welcome such efforts. “I would be frustrated as a member or fan if we weren’t looking to improve,” he said.
Hawthorn’s immediate focus remains Friday night’s knockout semi-final against Adelaide, but the saga has ensured Merrett’s future will remain a talking point well beyond this week.
