Kane Cornes has launched a scathing attack on Melbourne’s handling of Clayton Oliver’s long-term contract, describing it as “the worst contract in football history” after revelations the Demons are prepared to pay up to half his salary for him to play elsewhere.
Oliver has reportedly been told to explore his options following a tense meeting with new coach Steven King this week.
The Demons are said to be willing to foot as much as $700,000 per season of the star midfielder’s remaining five-year deal, a move that could cost them $3.5 million in total.
“The worst contract in football history”
Speaking on AFL Trade Radio, Cornes singled out Melbourne list boss Tim Lamb for heavy criticism. “Clayton Oliver, the worst contract in football history signed by Melbourne,” Cornes said. “What are the ramifications for the people that signed off on this? Tim Lamb… should be in the hot seat. How has he escaped any scrutiny for ticking off the worst contract in football history?”
Cornes also questioned the club’s accountability, pointing to what he described as poor leadership at management level. “This is a club that is willing to pay $700k (a year) out of their cap to a player to play for another club,” he said.
Oliver, meanwhile, has found himself in the headlines off the field as well, after a fiery exchange with reporters at Melbourne Airport before heading overseas.
