Jai Serong’s time at Hawthorn looks to be nearing an end, with as many as five clubs expressing interest in the versatile defender ahead of the trade period.
While Fremantle and Sydney have emerged as frontrunners, North Melbourne, Essendon, and Hawthorn remain in the mix at least for now.
It’s understood Serong recently met with Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir, as reported by SEN’s Sam Edmund, with the Dockers’ pursuit intensifying in recent weeks. That connection is a natural one; Serong’s older brother, Caleb, is the club’s co-vice-captain, and a move west would reunite the pair at AFL level.

Hawks brace for departure as Dockers circle
Hawthorn, meanwhile, appear resigned to losing the 22-year-old, who was drafted with Pick 53 in 2021 but has struggled to break into the senior side since.
The club’s recent signings of Tom Barrass and Josh Battle have pushed him further down the pecking order, leaving little opportunity for the Box Hill standout despite strong VFL form that earned him their best and fairest award last season.
Serong hasn’t played at AFL level since the Hawks’ semi-final loss to Port Adelaide in 2024 and has just 10 senior appearances in four years, one as the substitute. Still, his athleticism and composure off half-back have made him an appealing target for rival clubs seeking depth and versatility.
With both Fremantle and Sydney leading the chase, Serong’s future looks set to be decided sooner rather than later, and Hawthorn seem prepared to let him seek the opportunity he’s been waiting for.
