Legends Game mishap puts comedian in hospital with punctured lung image

Comedian Dave Hughes has ended up in hospital with broken ribs and a punctured lung following his appearance in the AFL's Legends Game on Thursday night.

Hughes was playing for the Vics against the All Stars in the charity clash which raises awareness and funds for prostate cancer.

From the hospital on Friday morning, Hughes' wife Holly Ife provided an update to Fox 101.9 Melbourne.

"The verdict is, three cracked ribs and slightly punctured lung," she said.

"Which he thinks happened in the first hit, and then he's been cleaned up a couple more times after that."

The 55-year-old was a focal point in the contest, stirring up several far more credentialed opponents.

In one such incident, Hughes received a free kick and a 50-metre penalty after he was shoved to the ground by former Gold Coast and Carlton ruckman-turned-social media star Dan Gorringe.

Hughes subsequently kicked the goal before again being sent to the Marvel Stadium turf by former Carlton and Brisbane antagonist Mitch Robinson.

"I reckon the Robinson push, I was standing right near that and he's jacked-up, Robbo, and he would have pushed his ribs in, I reckon," Hughes' Big V teammate Brendon Fevola said on Friday morning.

"I walked up to him after Robbo pushed him and I went to pick him up off the ground and he couldn't breathe, he was like, 'I'm in real pain, don't pick me up, let me get up myself.'

"I reckon that's when it happened, he literally couldn't get up off the ground."

Earlier, Hughes was dumped in a tackle by Joel Patfull after butchering a goal-scoring chance.

Those moments came after All Stars coach Shane Crawford had revved his team up to go after the TV and radio personality.

"I want everyone to tackle him at some stage," Crawford told his team.

"And while he's down, really get into him, okay?"

It's not yet clear what exactly caused Hughes' injuries.

While not the primary focus of the night, the All Stars ran out eight-point winners, 3.13.7 (112) to 3.11.11 (104).

Despite complaining of soreness following the match, Hughes reportedly carried on at the after party until around 1am before ultimately seeking medical intervention.
