Chris Scott or Alastair Clarkson? Former AFL forward reignites coaching debate image

Former AFL player Josh Jenkins believes another premiership for Geelong coach Chris Scott would place him firmly in the conversation as the greatest coach of the modern era.

Friday night's qualifying final win over Brisbane has seen the Cats advance to their tenth preliminary final in 15 seasons under Chris Scott, who took over from dual-premiership coach Mark Thompson at the end of 2010.

The Cats have been perennial finalists during Scott's tenure with the club, having missed the top eight just twice in 15 seasons, while winning two premierships in 2011 and 2022.

Jenkins, who played 149 games for Adelaide and Geelong, believes another Cats premiership could put Scott ahead of former Hawthorn and current North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson as the greatest coach of the modern era.

"I think a third premiership cup for Chris Scott would see him go down at least in the conversation (as the greatest coach of the modern era)," Jenkins said on SEN Melbourne.

"It will be a debate as to whether he or Alastair Clarkson is the greatest coach of the modern era.

"The consistency that this man (Scott) has been able to bring to the table for his footy club, and the way he sets the table each and every year is off the charts."

In the 31 finals Scott has coached since 2011, the Cats hold a record of 15 wins and 16 losses, including two premierships from three grand finals.

While Clarkson boasts a record of 16 wins and 10 losses in 26 finals, with four premierships from five grand finals.

However, Jenkins has questioned whether the consistency of 10 preliminary finals in 15 seasons for Scott outweighs the premiership success of Clarkson, who coached the Hawks to six preliminary finals in 17 seasons.

"I think this is the Michael Jordan, LeBron James debate," he said.

"Is it the perfection that Jordan had in the six NBA Finals he went to? Or is it the longevity that a LeBron James was able to get to in terms of getting there and giving yourself a chance each and every year?

"I think Chris Scott with a third premiership...will sit right there alongside Alastair Clarkson, maybe even above."
