Upon claiming a sixth Crichton Medal as Essendon's best and fairest for 2025, Zach Merrett has opened up on the reports regarding his wish to leave the club.

The captain took out a third-straight B&F, highlighting his continued importance to the club.

In addressing his future, the midfielder acknowledged he was contracted for two more seasons, but there were "complexities and uncertainty" that needed to be "worked through."

"The dialogue between myself and the club's leaders has been extremely open and very clear, both ways, over the last few weeks," Merrett told those in attendance.

"The last few weeks have certainly been difficult for me, my family and many people in and around the Essendon Football Club.

"I respect the club's position regarding their desire to retain me at the football club and fully understand what it means to be a contracted player and captain.

"I acknowledge that there are complexities and uncertainty right now and, regardless of the external noise and pressure, I'm willing and committed to continue working with the club and, with the help of those closest to me, work through those factors at play.

"I don't have control over what others say or do, but from my perspective, I will always show care and consideration for the fans, my teammates, coaches and the club, even if we disagree on some things. That's my commitment and it will not waver."

What followed, it must be said, sounded more like parting words than a rallying cry for a united push towards success.

"What I can say, categorically, is that my approach to football has always been the same. That is to stay ultra-professional, gather the right information from people I trust and make the best possible decisions for my career and family," the 29-year-old said.

"No club should be defined by one person and Essendon is no different. It's the sum of all parts that makes the club what it is.

"If I've learned anything across my last 12 years... it is more than just being passionate or hoping the club will get better. In elite sport you must execute the shared vision and perform to the highest standards, day in and day out.

"Lastly and importantly, my heartfelt thanks to the fans, you always show up. Your passion and patience is truly special."

It's understood Hawthorn remains the most likely destination for Merrett if he does get his wish to depart the Bombers.

A move to the Hawks would be a hammer blow for Essendon fans, but with two years to run on his deal, any trade for Merrett would have be a significant one.
