Biography of Roger Federer

Roger Federer, a native of Switzerland, was born on August 8, 1981 to a South African mother an a Swiss father. He began playing tennis at the age of eight. Growing up, he idolized Germany' Boris Becker and American Pete Sampras. As a junior tennis player, he had outstanding results, finishing the 1998 season as the World number 1. He has a 33-11 Davis Cup record, spread over 16 ties since 1999. Outside of tennis, he enjoys spending time at the beach, playing cards and table tennis. FC Basel, a local soccer team, is the one Federer roots for. The Roger Federer Foundation was formed in 2003 to help children with disabilities in South Africa and to promote sport for young people. He also helped organize an exhibition event in Indian Wells, California, All-Star Rally for Relief that benefits UNICEF's efforts to help tsunami victims. He speaks several languages including English, German, Swiss German, French, swedish and Italian. Some of the awards he has won are: ATP Player of Year, Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship award and ATPtennis.com fans’ favorite in 2004-06, I.T.W.A. Player of the Year and Ambassador for Tennis award winner in 2004-06, 2003 Swiss of the Year, 2004 Laureus World Sportsman of Year. In a November 2005 issue of People's Magazine, he was listed as one of the "Sexiest Men Alive" as an “International Man of Sexiness”. Recipient of U.S. Academy Outstanding Athlete in 2005-06 presented by USA Today and MSNBC (voted by fans). Had a stamp of him released by Swiss Post on April 10, 2007 in his birthplace of Basel.
