Portsmouth FC Biography

English Professional football club Portsmouth FC is based in the south coast city of Portsmouth and was founded on 5 April 1898 with John Brickwood, owner of the local Brickwoods Brewery, as chairman, and Frank Brettell as the club's first manager. The club joined Southern League in 1899 and played first league match at Chatham Town which ended in 1-0 victory. Portsmouth first season in the league was a huge success as the club won 20 out of 28 league matches, earning them the runner-up spot in the league. In 1910-11 season club was relegated to the second division but in the following season they were promoted. Due to the intervention of World War 1 all the football was suspended but the resumption of league Portsmouth won the Southern League for the second time.

Portsmouth debut in the First Season was a bit difficult one as they were defeated by several teams but still in the same season they reached the FA cup final which they lost to Bolton Wanderers in 1923-24. Portsmouth managed to survive from the relegation and after that their luck changes. The 1933-34 seasons saw Portsmouth again reach the FA Cup Final, beating Manchester United, Bolton Wanderers, Leicester City and Birmingham City on the way. The club was again defeated in the final, this time to Manchester City. Finally Portsmouth was able to win the FA cup title in 1938-39 beating favorites Wolves to 4-1. After the World War 11 Portsmouth success period started as they won the Football League and FA Cup double. The club retained the title in the following year beating Aston Villa 5-1 on the last day of the season and are thus one of only five English teams to have won back to back titles since World War II. Although the team finished third in 1954-55, subsequent seasons saw Portsmouth struggle and they were relegated to the Second Division in 1959.

In 1961 Portsmouth were relegated to the Third division but were promoted to second division where they spent most of 1960s era. In 1972 cash was injected to the club but it didn`t effect much as they were relegated to the third division again. In November 1976 the club found itself needing to raise £25,000 to pay off debts and to avoid bankruptcy therefore they had to sold much of their players. Because of this the club was relegated to the Fourth Division in 1978. In 1980 the club was promoted to the third division and in 1982-83 they won the third division title. In 1986-87 the club was promoted to the First Division but in the next season they were again relegated.

Jim Smith was appointed the new manager of the Portsmouth in 1991-92 season and straight away he appointed some good young players. He helped the site to reach the FA cup semi final losing on the penalties to Liverpool. In the summer of 1996 Terry Venables arrived at Portsmouth as a consultant, later taking over as chairman after buying the club. In December 1998 Portsmouth went into financial crisis again, Milan Mandaric saved the club with a takeover deal in May 1999, and the new chairman immediately started investing. Harry Redknapp took over as manager in early 2002 and went on to become the most successful manager of Portsmouth. He remained with the club till 2008 as assistant manager Tony Adams had been promoted to the manager's seat. In 2008, Portsmouth reached the FA Cup final for the first time since 1939 and went on to win the FA Cup.

For the 2008-09 season Portsmouth's first choice home colors are blue shirts with blue shorts and socks. The club has confirmed it will revert to its traditional strip for the 2009-10 season. The most frequent away colors used by Portsmouth have been white shirts with royal blue shorts and either royal blue or white socks.
